Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district operates independently and addresses specific local requirements, offering a diverse range of services that differ by district. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. The Environmental Health programs address the relationship between human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare inspections, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (radon), lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. The Land Development programs include critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunizations for children are provided through local health department clinics, often at low or no cost, and overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free and confidential service that helps track immunizations for families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals, and breastfeeding support for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children. General health information and referrals are accessible via telephone and appointments through the Resource Nurse program, which may also provide vouchers for acute healthcare needs.
