Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with other local and state agencies. Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local needs, providing diverse services that may differ by district, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health entities to develop a comprehensive state plan for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, and comprehensive physical exams, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations, often at low or no cost, and offer adult vaccines as well. The Immunization Registry helps track vaccinations for individuals and families. The WIC program supports Women, Infants, and Children with healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, and breastfeeding support. The Resource Nurse program provides general health information and referrals, and vouchers for acute health care needs may be available.
