Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with numerous state and local entities. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local requirements, offering a diverse range of services that can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health, the physical environment, and local ecosystems, covering areas such as Day Care Inspections, Epidemiology (including animal bites and food/waterborne illnesses), Food Establishment permits, Indoor Air Quality assessments, and more. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, and referrals, with various birth control options available. Immunization services are offered for routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, with low or no costs for those unable to pay. The WIC program provides nutritional support for women, infants, and children, including healthy food vouchers and health screenings.
