Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local needs by offering a variety of services, which can differ by district, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the relationship between human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare inspections, epidemiology, food establishment permits, indoor air quality, lead health programs, methamphetamine lab inspections, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams, and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at no or low cost for families in need, and also provide overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines may include Td boosters, hepatitis, pneumonia, and influenza shots, and the Immunization Registry helps track vaccination status. The WIC program supports women, infants, and children by providing healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals to healthcare providers. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. General health information and referrals are available through the Resource Nurse, and vouchers may be provided for acute healthcare needs.
