Public mental health services are concentrated in two primary areas: Community Crisis Response and assistance for Adults with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) or children facing serious emotional disturbances. COMMUNITY CRISIS RESPONSE SERVICES serve as the initial intervention for adults undergoing a mental health crisis, which may manifest as psychiatric symptoms including suicidal thoughts or intentions to harm others. Each Welfare region in Idaho is equipped with a community health center and several satellite offices that offer 24-hour crisis response services, including hotlines, emergency in-person psychiatric assessments, treatment referrals, and consultations with law enforcement, local hospitals, and other social service organizations as needed. SEVERE AND PERSISTENT MENTAL ILLNESS services are aimed at individuals aged 18 and over diagnosed with severe mental health disorders such as schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, major affective disorder, delusional disorder, or borderline personality disorder. These disorders must significantly disrupt the individual's ability to function in at least two areas of life, either consistently or sporadically. SPMI services encompass screening and referrals, assertive community treatment, crisis intervention, case management, psychiatric and medical services, short-term outpatient therapy, individual and group psychosocial rehabilitation, consultation and education, and community-supported employment. The Mental Health Program is overseen by the Division of Behavioral Health. Services are available in English, with interpreters accessible upon request.
