Idaho comprises seven health districts that collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district operates independently, responding to local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that may differ among districts. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystems of plants and animals. These programs include Day Care Health Inspections, Epidemiology (covering Animal Bites and Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (including Permits, Plan Reviews, and Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (such as Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs encompass Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water management, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site events, with low or no-cost options for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should check with the local health department for required vaccines. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their vaccinations and ensures they receive necessary immunizations on time. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program supplies healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five years old.
