Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as Day Care Health Inspections, Epidemiology (including Animal Bites and Foodborne Illness), Food Establishments (permitting, reviews, inspections), Indoor Air Quality (like Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women who lack insurance for these services.
