Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives encompass areas where human health intersects with the physical environment and the surrounding ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care Health Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing) and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be arranged for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or at special off-site events. These vaccinations are either low-cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to learn about specific vaccines required for travel destinations. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunizations and ensures you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, health and nutrition education, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants up to one year old; and Children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor. The Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative that provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. This program is for women who lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 and have not had a pap test in 5 years or more, or have never had a pap test; under age 50 with symptoms indicative of breast cancer (requires clinician's approval); or age 65 or older and not eligible for Medicare, or lacking Medicare part B.
