Each district is governed by a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services, including education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing) and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are provided. Educational resources and speakers are available for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine which specific vaccines are required for travel. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department must pay for the vaccine. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides: Healthy foods monthly redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year, and children under five years of age. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor. This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. To qualify for the Women's Health Check, women must lack health insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and be one of the following: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and exhibiting symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older who is NOT eligible for Medicare or lacks Medicare part B.
