Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering a variety of services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered via contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing for and reacting to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: This service provides Family Planning resources such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational materials and speakers can be arranged for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are typically low cost or free for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact the local health department to learn about specific vaccines required for different destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will incur a fee for the vaccine. Adult vaccines, including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry (a complimentary, voluntary, and confidential service) helps you and your healthcare provider keep track of your immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food options purchasable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, community program information and healthcare referrals, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational resources. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year of age, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: The Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. This program is for women who lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and are either: aged 50-64, aged 30-49 with no insurance and symptoms suggestive of breast or cervical cancer, or aged 65 and older without Medicare eligibility or without Medicare part B.
