Head Start (Craigmont)

Head Start is a comprehensive preschool initiative designed for children from families that meet income eligibility criteria. Local nonprofit organizations operate Head Start centers nationwide. The program accepts applications for children aged 3 and 5, specifically targeting families whose income falls below federal poverty guidelines. Eligible children must be at least 3 years old by September 1 and may include those with special needs or at high risk. A limited number of children from families with slightly higher incomes but who have special needs may also be accepted. The program provides essential services addressing medical, dental, educational, and social needs at no cost. Required documentation includes proof of income, the child's birthdate, and immunization records. Head Start offers various supportive services, including social services, parent involvement opportunities, nutrition assistance, mental health support, health education, disability services, dental care, and transportation. The program aims to enrich the lives of children, families, staff, and the community by providing quality education and family-centered services. It serves children aged 0-5 years for five days a week, offering 12 hours of programming each day, which includes four meals. Parents are encouraged to engage through volunteering and can also benefit from positive parenting classes. Transportation is available, and services are primarily offered in English.
