Idaho comprises seven health districts that collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local entities. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local needs by offering a diverse range of services that may differ across districts, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as Day Care Inspections, Epidemiology (including Animal Bites and Foodborne Illness), Food Establishments (permitting and inspections), Indoor Air Quality (including Radon), and public health concerns related to solid waste and methamphetamine labs. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, and comprehensive physical exams, including cancer and STD screenings. Routine childhood vaccinations are available through local health departments, often at low or no cost. The Immunization Registry is a confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for families and their doctors. The WIC program offers nutritional support for women, infants, and children, providing healthy foods, health screenings, and nutrition education. The Women’s Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these services.
