Idaho's seven health districts collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various local and state agencies. Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering diverse services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health care, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office works alongside the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health districts to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other health emergencies. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the connection between human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare inspections, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab assessments, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. Land Development programs encompass critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventories, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services offer education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings and STD testing), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization services are available through local health departments, offering routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at little or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for required vaccines. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their vaccination history and ensure they receive necessary vaccines. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these services, meeting specific income guidelines. Eligible women include those aged 50-64, those aged 30-49 who haven't had a pap test in five years or more, those under 50 with suspicious breast cancer symptoms (with clinician approval), and women over 65 who are not eligible for Medicare or do not have Medicare part B.
