Idaho's health districts, numbering seven, collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local needs by offering a variety of services that differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives encompass areas where human health intersects with the physical environment and the ecosystem. These programs include Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs cover Mortgage Surveys, Public Water Systems, Subdivision Reviews, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations. The Family Planning services offered include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources for community presentations upon request. Immunization services at local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations either at the health department or at special off-site clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment, and travelers should check with the local health department for required vaccines. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry, a free and confidential service, helps track immunizations for individuals and their healthcare providers, ensuring they receive necessary vaccines on time. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers supplemental nutrition assistance, including monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals to healthcare providers. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program, funded federally, provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for qualifying women who lack insurance coverage for these tests, meet income criteria, and fall within specific age ranges.
