Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and functions independently from state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a diverse range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs tackle issues where human health intersects with the physical environment and the ecosystem of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services that include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (which cover cancer screenings, sexually transmitted disease screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A wide range of birth control methods is available, along with educational materials and speakers for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are either low-cost or free for parents unable to pay. Overseas immunizations can be scheduled by appointment. Contact the local health department to determine the specific vaccines required for travel destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will be responsible for the vaccine costs. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry (a free, voluntary, and confidential service) helps you, your family, and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food options purchasable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); infants up to one year old; and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: The Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative that provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. To qualify, women must lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and exhibiting symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older, not eligible for Medicare, or lacking Medicare part B.
