Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local needs by offering diverse services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Programs in Environmental Health address the relationship between human health and the physical environment, including community interactions with plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a wide range of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers must contact the local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals and their doctors keep track of vaccinations and ensure timely immunizations. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC provides a supplemental nutrition program offering healthy foods through vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance that covers these tests, who meet income guidelines, and fall into specific age categories.
