Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services, which can differ across districts. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the interactions between human health, the physical environment, and local flora and fauna. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low cost or free for families unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department to determine which vaccines are required for specific travel destinations. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of your immunization history, ensuring you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program providing healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling from registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance covering these tests. Eligibility includes women aged 50-64, those aged 30-49 with symptoms and no insurance, and women aged 65 and older who are not eligible for Medicare or lack Medicare part B.
