Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They respond to local requirements by offering a range of services that can differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs that address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs involve: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy tests, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational resources and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations at their clinics or occasionally at special off-site events, often at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for required vaccines. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your doctor keep track of immunizations and ensures you receive only the necessary vaccines when needed. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods monthly through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance coverage for these tests, meet income guidelines, and fall into specific age categories.
