Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They cater to local needs, offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide plan for bioterrorism preparedness and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs include: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A range of birth control methods is available, along with educational materials and speakers for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events, often at low or no cost for families in need. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department for specific vaccine requirements for travel. Adult vaccines, such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps track immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program providing healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack health insurance for these tests, meet income guidelines, and fall into specific age categories.
