Each district features a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local needs by providing a diverse range of services, which may differ across districts. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: This includes programs addressing the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Mortgage Surveys; Public Water Systems; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings and STD testing), and referrals. Various birth control methods are available, and educational materials can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations, often at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Travelers should contact the local health department to determine necessary vaccines for their destinations. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the vaccines you need when required. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition initiative providing healthy foods monthly via vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and referrals to healthcare providers, along with individual counseling from registered dietitians. It supports pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five.
