Lewiston Youth Volunteer Program

Initiated in January 1993, the Lewiston Youth Volunteer Program currently engages 178 students. This initiative allows students to participate in six distinct service avenues. Eligibility is open to all students in grades seven to twelve wishing to join the volunteer program. The Occupational Strand involves regular assignments at volunteer sites with set schedules and tasks. The Volunteer Bureau caters to short-term needs for community service projects and must collaborate with another strand. The Natural Resources Strand focuses on environmental projects, recruiting students to participate. The Literacy Strand offers tutoring for elementary students. The Philanthropy Strand, previously known as S.L.I.C., involves a student committee that raises funds for grants. The G.I.V.E. Youth Advisory Council serves as the program's leadership group, where students create publicity strategies, manage a monthly newsletter, and recruit new participants. They also conduct outreach workshops emphasizing the value of service-learning and assess the program's effectiveness while reflecting on their personal growth. New ideas and volunteers are always welcome, and inquiries about the youth advisory council can be directed to the volunteer coordinator. Additionally, the RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteers) program is available for individuals over 55. Languages offered include English. For intake procedures, please reach out for more information.
