Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering a range of services that differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information about available services in your area, reach out to your local District Health Department. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs encompass: Day Care Inspections; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs cover: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community events. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine which vaccines are required for specific travel destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department must pay for them. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider track your immunization history and ensure you receive necessary vaccines timely. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials.
