Idaho's seven health districts collaborate closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local needs by offering diverse services that may differ from one district to another, including community and home health nursing, environmental health programs, dental hygiene, and nutrition services. Many of these services are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office partners with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare inspections, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab inspections, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water system oversight, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations and permits. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a wide range of birth control methods available. Educational materials and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. Local health departments also administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site locations, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department for specific vaccine requirements. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their vaccination history and ensures they receive necessary vaccines on time. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with registered dietitians. It serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program, funded federally, offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance that covers these tests, meeting specific income guidelines and age criteria.
