Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local health needs by offering diverse services, which can differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, and various birth control methods. Immunization services are available for routine childhood vaccinations, with low or no costs for those unable to pay. The WIC program offers nutritional support for women, infants, and children, providing healthy foods, health screenings, and nutrition education.
