Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with numerous state and local organizations. Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local needs by offering various services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified state plan for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs address the relationship between human health and the physical environment, covering areas such as Day Care, Epidemiology (including Animal Bites and Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (including Permits and Inspections), Indoor Air Quality (Radon), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development programs involve regulations concerning Critical Materials, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics or special off-site events, often at little to no cost for families in need. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps track immunizations for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals, and breastfeeding support for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five.
