Idaho consists of seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare as well as various state and local organizations. Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local demands by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits and inspections, indoor air quality (radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine lab assessments, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater management, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventories, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals, providing various birth control methods. Educational resources and speakers are available for community events upon request. Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need, along with overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary service that helps track immunizations for individuals and their families, ensuring timely vaccinations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides supplemental nutrition assistance, including healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education, community referrals, counseling with registered dietitians, and breastfeeding support. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children under five. The Women’s Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, meeting specific income guidelines. Eligible participants include women aged 50-64, those aged 30-49 who haven't had a pap test in five years or longer, women under 50 with breast cancer symptoms (with clinician approval), and women aged 65 or older not eligible for Medicare or lacking Medicare part B.
