Head Start (Malad) - Bear River

Head Start is a comprehensive preschool initiative aimed at children from families that meet income eligibility criteria. Local nonprofit organizations manage Head Start centers throughout the nation. The program accepts applications for children who are 4 years old, specifically those whose family income falls below poverty thresholds, and children must be 4 by September 1. It also caters to children with special needs or those considered at high risk, with a limited number of slots available for over-income children with special needs. The program provides support for medical, dental, educational, and social service needs at no cost. Families are required to provide proof of income, the child's birth date, and immunization records. Head Start offers various supportive services, including social services, parent involvement, nutrition, mental health, health education, disability services, and dental care. The program aims to enrich the lives of children, families, staff, and the community, helping families navigate life's challenges through quality education and family-oriented services. Center-based programs typically consist of 4-hour sessions, four days a week, while home-based families receive weekly visits. Children are provided with two meals each day, and parents are encouraged to volunteer. Additionally, the program offers positive parenting classes and conducts monthly home visits to support parents in their teaching roles and to assist families in developing and executing plans.
