Head Start (Canyon County - Main)

Head Start is a national preschool initiative aimed at children from families that meet income eligibility criteria. Local nonprofit organizations operate Head Start centers across the country. Applications are open for pregnant women and children aged 0-3 for Early Head Start, as well as children aged 3-4. Families must have incomes that fall below poverty guidelines, and the program also accommodates children with special needs or those at high risk. A limited number of over-income children with special needs may also be accepted. The program provides assistance with medical, dental, educational, and social service needs at no cost. Verification of income and the child's birthdate is required. Head Start offers supportive services including social services, parent involvement, nutrition, mental health, health, education, disabilities, and early intervention. It aims to enhance the lives of children, families, staff, and the community while helping families navigate challenges through quality education and family-centered services. The program serves children from low-income families aged 0-5 with various options, providing meals and snacks. Parental involvement is encouraged, and transportation may be available. WICAP Head Start also offers an Early Head Start program at the Payette County site for pregnant women and children aged 0-3. Services are provided in English.
