The seven health districts in Idaho collaborate with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state agencies. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local health needs by offering a variety of services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community and home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the most current information on available services in your area, contact your local Health District office. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the relationship between human health, the physical environment, and surrounding ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishments, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs include regulations on critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and sewage evaluations. Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, offering various birth control methods. Immunizations for routine childhood vaccinations are available at health district offices or special clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for families and their doctors. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community referrals, and support for breastfeeding, serving pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children under five. Services are available in English, with interpreters accessible. For general information, locations, and appointments, please call.
