Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and other local and state organizations. Each district operates independently and has a board of health appointed by county commissioners. They address community-specific needs by providing diverse services, which can include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other public health entities to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives tackle issues at the intersection of human health and the environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food safety, indoor air quality, lead health, meth labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs oversee critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, public water systems, and other related areas. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, and various birth control methods, with educational materials available for community outreach. Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations, often at low or no cost, and provide adult vaccines as well. The Immunization Registry helps track vaccination histories. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers nutritious foods, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals for eligible women and children. The Women's Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for qualifying women without insurance coverage for these tests.
