Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, alongside other local and state agencies. Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local health needs by offering diverse services, which may differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and other health entities to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health and the environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food, and waterborne illnesses), food establishments (permits, inspections, and plan reviews), indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs encompass regulations for critical materials, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum Aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with a variety of birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. Local health departments offer routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, often at low or no cost for families in need, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis A and B, pneumonia, and influenza, may also be available. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals track their immunizations and ensure they receive necessary vaccines. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides supplemental nutrition, health screenings, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare providers for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for women who meet specific criteria, including those without insurance that covers these tests.
