Public mental health services are primarily focused on two key areas: Community Crisis Response and assistance for adults with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) or children dealing with significant emotional disturbances. COMMUNITY CRISIS RESPONSE SERVICES serve as the initial intervention for adults undergoing a mental health crisis, which may involve psychiatric symptoms such as self-harm thoughts or intentions to harm others. Each Welfare region in Idaho is equipped with a community health center and several satellite offices that offer 24/7 crisis response services, including hotlines, emergency face-to-face psychiatric assessments, treatment referrals, and consultations with law enforcement, local hospitals, and other social service agencies as needed. SEVERE AND PERSISTENT MENTAL ILLNESS services are aimed at individuals aged 18 and older who experience the most severe and enduring forms of mental illness. Eligible individuals must have a diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, major affective disorder, delusional disorder, or borderline personality disorder. The severity of the psychiatric disorder must significantly impact the individual's ability to function in at least two areas of life, either continuously or intermittently. SPMI services encompass screening and referral, assertive community treatment, crisis intervention, case management, psychiatric and medical services, short-term outpatient therapy, individual and group psychosocial rehabilitation, consultation and education, as well as community supportive employment. The Mental Health Program is managed by the Division of Behavior Health. Services are available in English, with interpreters accessible upon request.
