Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various local and state agencies. Each district operates independently and has a health board appointed by county commissioners. The services offered can differ from one district to another and include community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishments, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams, and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization services provide routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, with low or no cost for those unable to pay. Overseas vaccinations are available by appointment, and adult vaccines may also be offered. The Immunization Registry helps track vaccination status for individuals and families. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community referrals, and breastfeeding support for eligible pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for qualifying women without insurance coverage for these services. Eligible participants include women aged 50-64, those aged 30-49 who haven't had a pap test in five years, younger women with suspicious symptoms, and women over 65 who are not eligible for Medicare.
