Each district has its own board of health appointed by county commissioners and functions independently of any state agency. They address local requirements by offering diverse services that can differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental care, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered via contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystems of plants and animals. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department for specific vaccine requirements for travel destinations. Adult vaccines like tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines may also be provided. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive the necessary vaccines at the appropriate times. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, offering: Monthly healthy food options redeemable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women; Breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum); Infants under one year; and Children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: The Women's Health Check is a federally funded initiative providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. To qualify, women must lack health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 without insurance and exhibiting symptoms indicative of breast or cervical cancer; or age 65 and older without Medicare eligibility or lacking Medicare part B.
