Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of any state agency. They address local demands by offering a range of services that can differ between districts, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are facilitated through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing and responding to bioterrorism threats and public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and local ecosystems. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs encompass: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be arranged for community events upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site locations. These vaccinations are offered at low or no cost for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact the local health department to find out which vaccines are required for specific destinations. Travelers receiving vaccines from the health department will need to pay for them. Adult vaccines, including Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza vaccines, may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of your immunizations, ensuring you and your doctor know when you are due for vaccines. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy foods purchasable with WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, information about community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves: Pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants up to one year of age, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance covering these tests, meet income criteria, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64, Age 30-49 without insurance and showing symptoms of breast or cervical cancer, or age 65 and older without Medicare or without Medicare part B.
