Idaho comprises seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare along with various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local requirements, offering diverse services that differ across districts, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are facilitated through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the environment and include areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishment inspections, indoor air quality, lead health programs, methamphetamine lab assessments, public pool regulations, and solid waste management. Land Development programs cover critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. The Family Planning services encompass education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams, and referrals, offering various birth control methods. Immunization clinics provide routine childhood vaccinations, often at low or no cost, and also offer overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines may be available as well. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that tracks immunizations for individuals and their healthcare providers. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides nutritious foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, and referrals to healthcare providers for eligible women, infants, and children. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to uninsured women who meet specific income criteria.
