Each district is governed by a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They cater to local requirements by offering a diverse set of services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparedness and response to bioterrorism and other public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health initiatives address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **Environmental Health Programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Waterborne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development initiatives include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and sexually transmitted disease screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, and educational materials can be provided for community presentations upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments administer routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or special off-site locations. These vaccinations are often low cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. For travel-related vaccines, please contact the local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for your destination. Adult vaccines like Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that keeps track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive only the vaccines you need when required. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS, AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program providing: monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information on community programs, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five years. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women. Women's Health Check is available for women who lack insurance covering mammograms or pap tests, meet income criteria, and are either: ages 50-64, ages 30-49 with no insurance and symptoms indicating potential breast or cervical cancer, or age 65 and older who are not eligible for Medicare or lack Medicare part B.
