Idaho consists of seven health districts that work in partnership with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by providing a diverse range of services, which can differ from one district to another. These services include community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health programs focus on the interactions between human health and the physical environment, covering topics such as daycare, epidemiology (animal bites, food and waterborne illnesses), food establishment permits, indoor air quality (including radon), lead health programs, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, Rathdrum aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Educational resources and speakers can be provided for community events upon request. Local health departments also offer routine childhood vaccinations, typically at low or no cost for families in need, and overseas immunizations by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be accessible. The Immunization Registry is a free, confidential service that helps individuals and their healthcare providers track immunizations. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program provides healthy foods, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, and individual counseling with registered dietitians, serving pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children under five. The Women's Health Check program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance coverage for these tests, based on specific age and income criteria.
