Idaho is served by seven health districts that work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare, along with other local and state organizations. Each district has its own health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They address local health needs by offering diverse services, which may differ from one district to another, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism and other public health crises. Environmental Health initiatives focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment, covering areas such as daycare, epidemiology, food establishments, indoor air quality, lead health, methamphetamine labs, public pools, and solid waste management. Land Development programs address critical materials regulation, mortgage surveys, non-domestic wastewater, public water systems, aquifer protection, shallow injection well inventory, subdivision reviews, and subsurface sewage evaluations. Family Planning services include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams, and referrals, with various birth control methods available. Immunization services offer routine childhood vaccinations at health department clinics, often at low or no cost for those unable to pay, as well as overseas immunizations by appointment. The Immunization Registry helps track vaccination history for families and ensures timely immunizations. The WIC program supports women, infants, and children with healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, and individual counseling. Additionally, the Women’s Health Check program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women without insurance or those who meet specific criteria.
