Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently of state agencies. They address local demands by providing a range of services that differ by district, including community health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs. Many of these services are delivered through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a comprehensive statewide strategy for responding to bioterrorism threats and public health emergencies. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: Environmental Health programs focus on the intersection of human health with the physical environment and surrounding ecosystems. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services such as education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer and STD screenings), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available. Educational resources and speakers can be requested for community presentations. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations during health department clinics or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low cost or free for parents who cannot afford them. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Contact your local health department to determine the specific vaccines required for travel destinations. Adult vaccines including tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps keep track of immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental nutrition program that provides healthy foods each month through WIC vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, community program information, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year, and children under five. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK is a federally funded initiative that offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women who lack insurance for these services, meet income guidelines, and fall into specific age categories.
