Each district is governed by a board of health appointed by county commissioners and functions independently from state agencies. They address local requirements by offering diverse services, which can differ from one district to another. These services encompass community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, many of which are provided through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. Additionally, the Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office (focused on Bioterrorism Planning) collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to create a unified statewide strategy for preparing for and responding to bioterrorism threats and public health crises. ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH: The Environmental Health programs address the intersection of human health with the physical environment and the ecosystem. **These programs cover: Day Care; Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness); Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections); Indoor Air Quality (Radon); Lead Health Program; Methamphetamine Labs; Public Pools; Solid Waste.** Land Development programs include: Critical Materials Regulation; Mortgage Surveys; Non-Domestic Waste Water; Public Water Systems; Rathdrum Aquifer Protection; Shallow Injection Well Inventory; Subdivision Review; Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). FAMILY PLANNING: Offers Family Planning services that include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (including cancer screenings, STD screenings, and HIV testing), and referrals. A variety of birth control methods are available, along with educational materials upon request. IMMUNIZATIONS: Local health departments provide routine childhood vaccinations through clinics at the health department or occasionally at special off-site events. These vaccinations are often low-cost or free for parents who cannot pay. Overseas immunizations are available by appointment, and travelers should contact their local health department to determine which vaccines are necessary for their destinations. Adult vaccines such as tetanus and diphtheria (Td) boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary, and confidential service that helps you and your healthcare provider track your immunization history and ensure you receive necessary vaccines on time. WIC (WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN) PROGRAM: WIC is a supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children that provides: Monthly healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition education classes, information about community resources, referrals to healthcare providers, individual counseling with registered dietitians, breastfeeding support, recipes, newsletters, and educational materials. WIC serves pregnant women, breastfeeding women (up to one year postpartum), infants under one year old, and children under five years old. WOMEN'S HEALTH CHECK contractor: This federally funded program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. To qualify, women must not have health insurance that covers mammograms or pap tests, meet income guidelines, and fall into one of the following categories: Age 50-64; Age 30-49 and have not had a pap test in 5 years or longer, or have never had a pap test; under age 50 with symptoms indicating potential breast cancer (requires clinician approval); or age 65 or older without Medicare eligibility or lacking Medicare part B.
