Idaho's seven health districts work closely with the Department of Health and Welfare and various state and local organizations. Each district has a health board appointed by county commissioners and operates independently from state agencies. They cater to local needs, offering a range of services that differ by district, including community health nursing, home health nursing, environmental health, dental hygiene, and nutrition programs, often through contracts with the Department of Health and Welfare. For the latest information on available services in your area, contact the nearest Health District office. The Public Health Preparedness and Communication Systems office collaborates with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, other public health districts, healthcare providers, and emergency responders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy for addressing bioterrorism and public health emergencies. Environmental Health programs cover aspects where human health intersects with the physical environment and local ecosystems, including Day Care, Epidemiology (Animal Bites, Food and Water Borne Illness), Food Establishments (Permits, Plan Reviews, Inspections), Lead Health Program, Methamphetamine Labs, Public Pools, and Solid Waste management. Land Development initiatives encompass Critical Materials Regulation, Mortgage Surveys, Non-Domestic Waste Water, Public Water Systems, Rathdrum Aquifer Protection, Shallow Injection Well Inventory, Subdivision Review, and Subsurface Sewage (Site Evaluations, Permits, Inspections). Family Planning services are available, which include education, counseling, pregnancy testing, comprehensive physical exams (with cancer and STD screenings), and referrals, offering most birth control methods. Educational resources and speakers for community presentations can be requested. Local health districts provide routine childhood vaccinations at clinics, with low or no cost for parents unable to pay, and overseas immunizations are available by appointment. Adult vaccines such as Td boosters, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, pneumonia, and influenza may also be offered. The Immunization Registry is a free, voluntary service that helps track immunizations for you and your family, ensuring you receive necessary vaccines. The WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Program offers healthy food vouchers, health screenings, nutrition classes, referrals, and breastfeeding support for pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children under five. Satellite offices are located in Cambridge, Council, and New Meadows, with services available in English and interpreters accessible upon request.
