The Special Assistance Fund for Emergencies (SAFE) offers support to individuals and families who are having trouble covering their utility bills due to financial constraints or other exceptional situations through a one-time payment. To receive assistance, applicants must consult with a SAFE Partner agency. These partners are tasked with confirming eligibility and collecting necessary documentation. Once eligibility is confirmed, the funds will be sent directly to the utility provider in the applicant's name. Due to limited funding, efforts are made to distribute resources fairly and ethically. Key guidelines for the SAFE program include: assistance can only be granted once within a 12-month timeframe, utility bills must be overdue by at least 30 days to qualify, and individuals are ineligible if they have received or have pending applications for other state or federal low-income energy assistance programs in the past year. Applicants must seek help through a participating SAFE Partner, who will assess eligibility based on these and other program criteria.
