The Special Assistance Fund for Emergencies (SAFE) offers support to individuals and families who are having difficulty paying their utility bills due to financial constraints or exceptional circumstances through a one-time payment. Those seeking help must connect with a SAFE Partner agency to apply for potential assistance with their utility costs. SAFE Partners are tasked with confirming the eligibility of applicants and collecting necessary documentation. Once eligibility is established, funds will be sent directly to the utility provider in the applicant's name. The availability of funds is limited, and efforts are made to ensure fair and ethical distribution. The SAFE program adheres to specific guidelines: assistance can only be granted once within a 12-month timeframe, and the utility bill must be at least 30 days overdue before assistance can be requested. Individuals are ineligible for SAFE funds if they have received approval for any other state or federal low-income energy assistance program within the last 12 months or if they have a pending application for such programs. Those in need must apply through a participating SAFE Partner, who will assess eligibility based on these and additional program criteria.
