This program provides financial aid to assist low-income families in covering their home energy expenses. Regular benefits can range from $20 to $500, with the amount determined by factors such as income, the ages of household members, energy costs, and housing circumstances. Generally, this is a one-time benefit for the program year. Emergency benefits are available for those eligible for HEAP who face energy-related crises, like power shutoffs or insufficient fuel supplies. Households must pass a resource test, and the benefit amounts can differ. Additionally, there are Heating Equipment Repair or Replacement Benefits to fix or replace essential heating systems. Cooling Assistance Benefits can help purchase and install air conditioning units or fans for individuals with documented medical conditions worsened by heat, provided they have already received a regular benefit exceeding $21. Clean and Tune Benefits are also offered to maintain the primary heating equipment, which may include chimney cleaning and minor repairs, with costs covered up to $400.
