The initiative focuses on enhancing the quality of life, financial security, and economic self-sufficiency for families and individuals. It provides a comprehensive range of confidential support services to community members throughout the year, aimed at helping families develop financial management skills and thrive in the workforce. Available services encompass: Benefits Eligibility and Assistance, Financial Education Workshops, One-on-One Financial Mentoring, Banking Assistance, Education and Career Counseling, Resume and Job Development, Homeownership Assistance, College Entrance Assistance, help with the Federal Application For Student Aid (FAFSA), Free Community Events, and Free Tax Preparation Assistance for eligible taxpayers (refer to the separate listing for VITA at Buffalo Federation of Neighborhood Centers).
Intake Process: Walk-ins are welcome. For College Entrance Assistance, appointments can be scheduled via phone. Tax Preparation Assistance operates on a first-come, first-served basis; registration opens one hour prior to the designated times. Applicants should bring the following documents: Proof of identification (photo ID), Original Social Security Cards (not copies) for all family members or a verification letter from the Social Security Administration. If lacking a Social Security Number, an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter can be used for all family members. Proof of foreign status is required for ITIN applicants. Additionally, provide birth dates for all family members listed on the tax return, wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc) from all employers, interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099), all Forms 1095, Health Insurance Statements, and Health Insurance Exemption Certificate if applicable. Include total payments made to daycare providers along with their tax identification number. If available, bring last year's federal and state tax returns and proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit, such as a blank check. For electronic filing of a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign necessary forms.
