Herkimer County Public Health Nursing Service

This program delivers a range of public health services such as Rabies Prevention, which involves receiving notifications of dog bites in the county and assisting the bitten individuals in assessing rabies risk and determining if post-exposure prophylaxis is necessary. It also includes Lead Poisoning Prevention, where support is provided to families with children who are at risk or have elevated blood lead levels to help lower those levels, although testing is referred to the NYS office. The Immunization Program offers both mandatory and optional vaccinations for county residents, while the Communicable Disease Program investigates and collaborates with other agencies on reports of communicable diseases defined by the state. Additionally, the Healthy Families Program provides guidance and support to at-risk families regarding parenting and various life challenges. Lastly, the program focuses on Emergency Preparedness by educating the community about readiness for natural and other disasters, alongside Children's Programs such as Early Intervention.
