Iris Wolfson High School

Iris Wolfson creates a supportive and academically stimulating environment tailored for students who struggle to connect with peers and adults in conventional schools due to their social and emotional needs. The program promotes acceptance, academic success, self-sufficiency, tolerance, and inspires students to reach their full potential. Modeled after standard educational frameworks, courses are organized by department, and the curriculum aligns with the New York State Common Core Learning Standards. Students can earn college credits through a collaboration with Farmingdale State College (SUNY) and are expected to graduate with a high school diploma. A variety of electives are available to encourage critical thinking, fulfill graduation requirements, reinforce learning material, support independent living, and enhance personal management skills. The school primarily caters to students with emotional disabilities (such as Generalized Anxiety Disorders and Depression), various learning disabilities, and spectrum disorders that mirror the needs found in district-based programs. Instruction is tailored and personalized to suit students' cognitive abilities and learning preferences, with additional instructional and work-based learning opportunities available to help students pursue a Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Commencement Credential.
