This federally funded initiative aims to assist low-income families in managing the high costs associated with home energy. Households that pay for heating separately or those that have heating included in their rent may qualify for a one-time regular benefit. Furthermore, families facing a heating emergency might be eligible for an emergency benefit and/or a Heating Equipment Repair/Replacement (HERR) benefit. The HEAP program typically starts in mid-November and concludes in mid-March or when funding runs out. There is also a Clean and Tune benefit that provides energy efficiency services to qualifying households before the heating season begins. These services can include cleaning primary heating equipment, making minor repairs, and installing carbon monoxide detectors. A cooling component may also be available for medically needy households to assist with air conditioner purchases during warmer months. Most benefits are paid directly to heating or utility providers. Income guidelines and benefit amounts are updated annually. Applications for Regular HEAP can be submitted online at myBenefits during the HEAP season.
