This program offers support and counseling aimed at helping individuals who are legally blind to find or keep employment. Vocational counselors collaborate with clients to create an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE), which serves as a guide toward achieving their career objectives. These objectives can differ widely, including job preparation, job search, job retention, or independent living.

To begin the process, interested individuals should reach out to their nearest district office or call the toll-free number: 1-866-871-3000 or TDD: 1-866-871-6000 to request an application or assistance with it. The Application for Service (OCFS-1002) is available on the NYSCB website (https://visionloss.ny.gov) and should be submitted to the local district office. Following this, an initial interview will be arranged with a NYSCB Counselor or representative. Referrals can also come from schools, doctors, private agencies for the blind, or other community, health, or social service organizations. Although the application process is generally straightforward, additional documents like medical reports, school records, or work history may be required to assess eligibility. Recent medical documentation confirming the disability can be beneficial and may be requested; if unavailable, NYSCB will help procure this information.
